SimplePhrase Lovecraft Library

Here you will find works by H. P. Lovecraft, the celebrated horror author.

I became interested in Lovecraft in early 2009 and sought out inexpensive means of obtaining his work (which, to the best of my knowledge, is in the public domain). Lovecraft's popularity ensures that there are numerous free online sources of the author's writings. To my increasing irritation, however, I was unable to find a single source that was properly italicized. Most often, italics were completely absent. This, to my mind, made the texts unsuitable for reading. A second, more minor complaint was the almost total absence of the long dash in any of the texts. Hyphens were usually used instead. While a hyphen will serve in this capacity, I strongly prefer to see the long dash.

This project came about when I decided to address these two complaints. Obtaining hardcopies of Lovecraft's work from friends and libraries, I compared them to the electronic texts and made the necessary corrections. The fruits of these labors are made available here. It should perhaps be noted that these are not definitive texts; when faced with the inevitable discrepancies in the available source materials, I usually just went with the option I liked better rather than conducting my own research. These versions are, however, quite suitable for the casual reader.

After waffling a bit on the format to use, I finally decided to put the stories into one large HTML file. The file is fairly bare-bones, with minimal formatting and no extraneous linkage. This ensures greater compatibility and adaptability. When reading in a browser, I recommend adjusting the font size to your liking and resizing the window to create a pleasing line length for reading.
