e.g. mix 2010.09: Electric Brains

  1. Robot Parade by They Might Be Giants from the album No! (2002). This is ostensibly a kids album, but a few of the tracks, like this one, just tickle me pink. The mix takes its title from this track.
  2. Lazybones by Soul Coughing from the album Irresistable Bliss (1996). I love the atmosphere this song creates, particularly as it is coming to its close.
  3. Today by Smashing Pumpkins from the album Siamese Dream (1993). Not my favorite band, and not my favorite song by them, but the transition was good, and it's not a bad little tune.
  4. This Too Shall Pass by OK Go from the album Of the Blue Colour of the Sky (2010). This is the song that had the Rube Goldberg video. As impressive as the video is, it was the song that left a lasting impression with me.
  5. Sunlamp Show by The Aliens from the album Luna (2008). I stumbled across these guys a year or two ago. I was surprised; I didn't know people were still making music like this.
  6. Got to Get You Into My Life by The Beatles from the album Revolver (1966). Sir Paul has confirmed that this song is about marijuana. It was written when the band was first discovering the drug.
  7. Badge by Cream from the album Goodbye (1969). This album was released after Cream had disbanded. The sound of this song launched a thousand 70s bands.
  8. Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who from the album Who's Next (1971). A somewhat cynical look at the revolutionary themes that were common in the late 60s.
  9. Life Goes By by The Special Goodness from the album Land Air Sea (2004). I like the guitar solo on this song. It sort of stumbles along for a bit, and then without warning it breaks into soaring awesomeness.
  10. All I Really Want by Alanis Morissette from the album Jagged Little Pill (1995). I think Alanis Morissette is awesome.
  11. Tiger Bomb by The Presidents of the United States of America from the album Freaked Out and Small (2000). "Keeps a funny joke tucked inside her grin" is an awesome line.
  12. In the City by Joe Walsh from the album The Warriors (1979). This song is played at the end of the film, The Warriors. When I watched it, and those opening chords hit, it was one of the best moments of my life.
  13. Ten Years Gone by Led Zeppelin from the album Physical Graffiti (1975). This is in my top 5 Zep songs.
  14. Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover by Sophie B. Hawkins from the album Tongues and Tails (1992). I don't do repeats often, but this is one of my all-time favorite songs, and it goes really well after the Zeppelin.
  15. 7 by Prince from the album <Symbol> (1992). The religious themes here aren't nearly as annoying if you think of them in the same way you would, say, Greek mythology. And the other themes, talking about intellect and love winning against the forces of ignorance and cruelty? I'm all about that.
  16. Can't Lose You by Type O Negative from the album Bloody Kisses (1993). The little detail about this song that tickles me is the "pop" sound in the second verse.
