-
Mind Games by John Lennon from the album Mind Games (1973). I love some of the imagery in this song, particularly the line from which this mix takes its title. Basically this song is a call to put your money where your mouth is when it comes to peace and love. It's not enough to pay lip service to the concept; you have to live it, thereby serving as a positive example to others. Right on.
-
Ordinary World by Duran Duran from the album Duran Duran (1993). This is the second self-titled Duran Duran album, the first being from 1981. The later album is commonly known as the "Wedding Album" because of the photos on the sleeve. This song is basically a break-up song, albeit with powerful lyrics and music, but for me it takes on additional meaning in relation to my struggles with depression and religion. When it comes down to it, I'm looking for an ordinary world all the time.
-
Let Love Rule by Lenny Kravitz from the album Let Love Rule (1989). Sort of a continuation of the peace-and-love them from the first track. This one is more proactive, and despite its leisurely pace has fantastic energy. Love that sax solo too.
-
In My Dreams by Big Audio Dynamite II from the album The Globe (1991). Excellent use of samples here. I find this song highly pleasing, even though Mick Jones can't really sing worth a shit.
-
Plush by Stone Temple Pilots from the album Core (1992). The critics were pretty hard on STP in the early days, calling them grunge imitators. In this case, the critics had their heads deeply planted in their stupid asses. To me it's particularly telling that, in a January 1994 Rolling Stone poll, the band was simultaneously voted Best New Band by Rolling Stone's readers and Worst New Band by the magazine's music critics. Plush was STP's first hit, and I think it's fucking awesome. And I'm not wrong.
-
Digging in the Dirt by Peter Gabriel from the album Us (1992). This song is so bad-assed. Don't talk back, motherfucker.
-
Love, Hate, Love by Alice In Chains from the album Facelift (1990). There is a good portion of my teenage years which would take Alice In Chains songs for its theme music. This is one such song. "I live for you, but I'm not alive?" Been there, done that.
-
I Don't Care Anymore by Phil Collins from the album Hello, I Must Be Going! (1982). Hey, its another Genesis member! (Peter Gabriel being the other one on this mix, of course.) Love the drum work on this one, and the sparse instrumentation sets it off beautifully. Phil Collins, despite being a bit of a weenie, does a fair impersonation of a hard-ass for this tune.
-
Voodoo Chile by The Jimi Hendrix Experience from the album Electric Ladyland (1968). Get hip to Hendrix's epic blues masterpiece. Electric Ladyland was Hendrix's last studio album, and it's fucking amazing. This is one of the high points.
-
Lake Fever by The Tragically Hip from the album Music@Work (2000). Here's another serving from my favorite Tragically Hip album. As always, great lyrics, great groove. Not much else to say about this except to point out the brilliance of the concept of "coital fury."
