The Real World by Men Without Hats from the album Pop Goes the World (1987). I think that the little girl speaking on this track is Jenny, who gets mentioned in several songs on this album. This is the heaviest track on the album, and I've always liked it for that.
-
Heaven Knows by Robert Plant from the album Now and Zen (1988). This marks the first ever repeat track of the e.g. mix series. This song appears on e.g. mix 2007.01: Painted Big. I think it just lends itself to being on mix tapes. That's Jimmy Page on the guitar solo, by the way.
-
Electric Chair by Prince from the album Batman (1989). The posturing of Prince is second-to-none, I think. Good fun, highly amusing.
-
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me by U2 from the album Batman Forever Soundtrack (1995). Why not follow up a Batman song with another Batman song? This is my favorite U2 song, which probably tells you a little bit about my musical tastes in general. I like the drama.
-
Trigger Happy Jack (Drive By a Go Go) by Poe from the album Hello (1995). Speaking of drama... I think this song is totally hot.
-
Ma-Ma-Ma Belle by Electric Light Orchestra from the album On the Third Day (1973). This riff has gotta be in my top ten riffs of all time. Its immense power and attitude lights me up every time I hear it.
-
Space is the Place by Spacehog from the album Resident Alien (1995). This is on here for Ange, to whom I was talking about this song back in July.
-
Love You Madly by Cake from the album Comfort Eagle (2002). Right on.
-
That's All by Genesis from the album Genesis (1983). I've always really liked this track, from back when Phil Collins was hip. I like the drumwork in particular. It's simple, but it really works in setting the mood.
-
Best of Both Worlds by Van Halen from the album 5150 (1986). When David Lee Roth and Van Halen parted ways, the Van Halen fans were all worried about what the replacement vocalist would be like. How could you follow up David Lee Roth? When 5150 came out, the answer became apparent: find a vocalist who kicks ass in his own way. I love the guitar work on this song. When you're playing through a tube amplifier, and you push the tubes to the point that they're just starting to overdrive into distortion, you can pluck the strings softly to get a clean sound, and hit it hard to get a crunchy sound. Eddie Van Halen rides that line superbly here.
-
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by The Beatles from the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967). Gotta throw in a classic once in a while.
-
Then She Did... by Jane's Addiction from the album Ritual de lo Habitual (1990). This is not the best Jane's Addiction song. For that, you'll want "Three Days." It is, however, my favorite Jane's Addiction song. Sentiment and drama.
-
The Real Thing by Faith No More from the album The Real Thing (1989). For my money, this is the best drug song out there. With vivid imagery, it talks frankly of the horrors of addiction while not shying away from the fact that taking drugs can be life-alteringly awesome. The real thing, indeed.
